BMI is a general screening tool and does not account for muscle mass, age or body composition. It is not a diagnosis.

How BMI is calculated

Body Mass Index (BMI) divides your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared (kg/m²). It gives a quick estimate of whether your weight sits in a healthy range for your height.

What the categories mean

  • Below 18.5 — underweight
  • 18.5 – 24.9 — healthy weight
  • 25.0 – 29.9 — overweight
  • 30.0 and above — obesity
